Character Information
Amos is a mechanic out in deep space aboard the ship Rocinante, in the 24th century. Originally hailing from Baltimore (part of the North American Trade Zone), Amos had a very rough and traumatic childhood and that shaped and fractured some key parts of him, namely his sense of morality, in that his moral compass is very different from that of others and he has a more brutal / inclined-to-violence nature.

As he's grown, he's developed a very fine-tuned sense of himself and he's exceedingly self-aware; he knows his perspective of right and wrong isn't the same as the "good people" around him, but in knowing that, he does his best to borrow from them, and he has the deepest respect (and fierce protectiveness) for good people. He knows what goodness looks like and he knows it's not his first instinct, and it bothers him that it doesn't bother him when he does "bad things" so he does try to mimic the actions of "his people." When he's identified and determined someone to be good and righteous, he will consider what they would do in situations, and use that to guide his actions.

He's very pragmatic and straightforward, he can be stoic but still with a deadpan sense of humor. Fiercely protective, doesn't judge much, doesn't really think about or care why people do what they do, just — what he needs to know about them. People generally fall into three categories for him: bad people, people you follow, and people you need to protect. Once he's determined you're either B or C, he's almost guaranteed to be loyal to you forever.

TL;DR - he's not a hero who will "save everyone" but if the people in danger and in need saving are his people, then he will. It's just an important distinction. He's not generally motivated by the concept of "the greater good," he's motivated by a fierce protectiveness and loyalty to those in his tribe, and that tribe can grow.
Appearance & Demeanor
Amos Burton is broad-shouldered, muscular, and cuts an imposing figure. He's a solid tank and very much has the look of a person who's done hard, physical labor much of his life. He carries his lived life in how he moves through the world. He'll probably often smell of engine grease, burnt metal, etc. and even in this world, while being less familiar with cars, he'll be putting his mechanical skills to use and teaching himself/learning all that he can about the type of machinery he's less used to.

There won't be anything overly remarkable or noticeable in his accent, just a standard American east coast accent. Outwardly, he's more stoic and when he's looking at you — especially if he doesn't know you — you might not be sure if he's just taking you in, or assessing you as a threat and waiting for a reason to act. He generally has a calm voice, sometimes flat in tone, even in tense situations, but that "calm" can be implicitly terrifying if you're messing with anyone he's determined he needs to protect.

He is more or less pretty approachable, easy to make conversation with, but what he says and does in conversation can sometimes be off-putting, depending on the subject matter. He's matter-of-fact about things he feels need to be done, especially taking out a threat.
Skills & Abilities
Amos has a kind of instinctive understanding of machinery, given the work he does and how he's relied upon. He’s the guy who can keep a ship running under fire, patch a hull breach with whatever’s at hand, and bring systems back online with the equivalent of a wing and a prayer.

Outside of his work on the ship, he's skilled — in often brutal ways — with hand-to-hand combat. In a fight, there’s no hesitation, no second-guessing. He reacts quickly to a threat and doesn't second-guess the action he determines he needs to take, and he won’t flinch from doing it again. Even in the act of violence, he can be unnervingly calm and controlled. Violence doesn’t scare him. Really, not much does, by his own admission. Violence and brutality makes sense to him.
